Yes, You Can Still Set Goals...It's Okay!

So it's a new year - time to reflect on last year and set goals and intentions for the new one.  Or is it?

After last year, I totally understand if you feel like setting New Year's resolutions, goals, or intentions is pointless.  After all, who could have anticipated the pandemic and the way it threw our lives into upheaval for most of the year? Who knows what's to come in the future? Many people (myself included) found their yearly goals impossible to realize in 2020. Why set goals when the rug could be pulled out from under us yet again?

Well, something powerful happened in 2020 as a result of the pandemic that I think is worth reflecting on - something that could help our approach to setting 2021 goals and the way in which we go about goal setting in the future.  It's the power of the PIVOT.

Last March, because of pandemic and also because of an unplanned opportunity to buy a new house, I had all but closed up my business for the foreseeable future to attend to higher priorities.  My word for 2020 was ALLOW, and that turned out to be helpful - there was a lot of letting things go last year!

Along the way, I realized that many businesses had PIVOTED so that they could keep going.  Seamstresses who normally sold clothing turned to making and selling masks.  Others started online stores to make up for lost art show income.  Local restaurants offered pop-up dinners and curbside alcohol pickup (genius!). Seeing this inspired me to see where I could pivot, as well. I made some changes to the way I work online and I ended the year having surpassed the goal I had set for myself in 2020.

Maybe you have your own story of pivoting during 2020.  In fact, I think pivoting is part of life in general.  It's just that the pandemic highlighted its importance.

While we don't know what 2021 has in store for us, trust yourself to be able to meet whatever challenges lay ahead, and use the power of the PIVOT if things don't turn out the way you anticipated.

One way to do this is to have an overarching word or intention that you want to represent the year.  No matter what goals you set, or what happens throughout the year, everything you do is meant to hold that same intention or word.

For instance, my word for this year is ALIGNMENT.  I know that when I am aligned with who I am and who I want to be, I'm happy, in the zone, and feeling good.  I will set specific goals for myself and my business, but regardless of what happens, I will try to stay focused on the importance of that intention for alignment.
